What does it mean to be kind?

Kindness is ….

  • Being friendly, generous and considerate of others
  • Showing goodwill to others
  • Being concerned when others are upset
  • Helping people when they need you
  • Doing something nice for someone, without expecting anything in return

What is the story of the Good Samaritan? (Mark 12:28-31).

  • The story of the Good Samaritan, as told by Jesus in one of the gospels of the New Testament.
  • A traveller is beaten up and robbed and left for dead along the road.
  • A priest comes by, but deliberately avoids the man.
  • A lawyer also comes by, but he too avoids the injured.
  • Finally, a Samaritan comes by, and he helps the injured man, in an act of mercy and compassion.

What is the story of Jesus healing the paralysed man? (Mark 2: 1-12)

  • 4 men went to Jesus carrying their friend who was paralysed as they believed Jesus could heal the man.
  • They lowered him in front of Jesus who was happy with their faith.
  • Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven
  • Jesus asked the man to walk and he got up and walked

What do these stories tell us about how Jesus wants us to treat each other?

  • The good Samaritan - ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’
  • A good Samaritan is a person who does good deeds out of compassion and not because of any hope of reward
  • Jesus healed the Paralysed man – shows kindness to everyone
  • The paralysed man desperately wanted to be able to walk but Jesus first forgave him for his sins and then he healed him. God can see things that others can't see, like how we are doing on the inside.

Is it possible to be kind to everyone all the time?

Finally, a Samaritan comes by, and he helps the injured man, in an act of mercy and compassion.

  • A traveller on his way Jericho struggled along in the heat
  • A gang of robbers attacked him taking all his belongings
  • They left him hurt and alone
  • A priest walked by but didn’t stop to help he just continued
  • Next a lawyer walked by; he didn’t stop to help he just continued
  • Finally, a Samaritan came by, he stopped to help the man
  • He took him to the nearest inn to spend the night until he was better

 

In small groups children to act out the story of the Good Samaritan.
